Alabama Hills - The Alabama Hills offer a rugged landscape, dramatic scenery, and Hollywood history. Interestingly, the low, worn, rounded Alabama Hills are the same age as the jagged peaks of the Sierra. Both formed more than 100 million years ago and are composed of granite, but the desert wind-blown sands have blasted this rock, creating the weathered hills, while constant freezing and thawing create the ragged appearance of the Sierra. |

Entering the Alabama Hills, the feeling of the old west is immediate. Since the 1920s, hundreds of western movies have been filmed here. One expects Gene Autrey, Hopalong Cassidy, or the Lone Ranger to ride out on horseback from behind the rounded and twisted rocks. As Gregory Peck and Anne Baxter demonstrate, the romance of the west can be found here. Recognizing the important contribution that the movie industry has made to the local character and economy of Lone Pine, the town hosts an annual film festival. The Lone Pine Film Festival features tributes to Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and others who have made movie history along the eastern slope of the Sierra. |
