Study of Prehistoric Site Studies - Sites are protected by state and federal law so that our grandchildren's children may be enriched by the legacy of American Indian forebears. Sites may also be considered sacred by modern Indian tribes and should be appropriately respected. Conversion of Highway 395 through Inyo and Mono counties from the two-lane road that it has been for many decades, into a divided, four-lane highway to meet today's transportation needs, has necessitated detailed scientific study of sites within the area of direct impact. These studies have provided information important for understanding the cultural and natural history of Owens Valley. For more details of a technical archaeological study, click on Archaeology Dig.
