Military Facilities

Far Western personnel have extensive experience with desert military bases, such as Hill and Nellis Air Force bases, Fort Irwin NTC, and NAWS China Lake.  Ongoing work for Hill Air Force Base since 2001 includes Section 106 and Section 110 inventories, site testing and data recovery, and the development and updating of archaeological planning documents. As part of our 20-year track record of cultural resource studies at NAWS China Lake, Far Western has conducted considerable work on Mojave B Range.  These studies have included a sample survey design, completion of a large-scale sample survey, and formal evaluation of nearly 60 prehistoric sites. Starting in 1995, Far Western conducted 18 delivery orders on China Lake for EFA West, San Bruno. The following are a partial list demonstrating the range of prehistoric studies: conduct the prehistoric Coso Rock Art District/National Historic Landmark boundary study, survey, and formal nomination; design and implement a sample survey of the pinyon zone/Coso Target Area (1,860 acres, 148 sites); and mitigate 11 Late Period prehistoric sites in Burro Canyon OB/OD.

Through a TetraTech contract with SWDIV, Far Western is also in collaboration on the Historic and Archeological Resources Protection (HARP) Plan for NAWS-China Lake.  Far Western has conducted additional studies after 1999 through Southwest Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command, San Diego. These have included test excavation and evaluation of 14 prehistoric sites within the Coso Target Range; development of a cultural resources treatment element for the Coso Target Range; intensive survey of over 6,000 acres and test excavation of 28 sites in the Airport Lake and Baker target areas at NAWS-China Lake.
