Resource Management Agencies

  • Bureau of Land Management
  • US Forest Service
  • Bureau of Reclamation
  • California State Parks
  • California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)
  • US Army Corps of Engineers
  • National Park Service
  • Nevada Division of Forestry

Since its inception, Far Western has conducted archaeological studies for a variety of state and federal resource management agencies (see partial list).

Many of these studies were conducted as part of the environmental review process associated with such projects as timber sales, land exchanges, trail and recreational development, stream restoration, and road construction. Knowledge of agency-specific guidelines and management procedures, as well as a thorough grounding in the Section 106 regulations of the National Historic Preservation Act, the National Environmental Preservation Act, the California Environmental Quality Act, and other relevant statutes, are necessary.

Energy

  • California Energy Corporation
  • Sierra Pacific Power Company
  • Tuscarora Gas Transmission Company
  • Mojave Pipeline Company
  • PGT Gas Transmission

Without a doubt, the most challenging cultural resources studies and regulatory environment are associated with the development of massive geothermal, gas-pipeline, and electrical-transmission-line projects. Over the last 14 years, Far Western has served as principal technical consultant for the California Energy Corporation and the U.S. Navy at the Coso Geothermal Development at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center. More recently, we have conducted test evaluations and data recovery excavations at archaeological sites situated along nearly 500 miles of gas pipeline and electric transmission line corridor in Northeastern California and Western Nevada for the Sierra Pacific Power Company and Tuscarora Gas Transmission Company. These studies not only allowed our clients to proceed with licensing and construction in a timely and cost-effective manner, but have also resulted in comprehensive research reports that have proved lasting contributions to regional prehistory and history.

Military

  • Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake
  • Fort Irwin
  • Camp Pendleton
  • Fallon Naval Air Station
  • Lemoore Air Force Base
  • Chocolate Mountains Marine Corps Aerial Gunnery Range
  • Presidio of Monterey
  • Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms
  • Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Detachment Concord

Far Western has developed and implemented long-term cultural resources programs at a variety of major U.S. military installations, including the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, the U.S. Army's primary training facility for mechanized warfare, and the Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake. Currently, Far Western is the primary "on-call" consultant for cultural resources services for EFA West-Department of the United States Navy. Cultural resources studies at active military facilities often involve working in areas subject to unpredictable range closures. Hands-on experience with military range control and safety protocols is an obvious requirement.

Transportation

  • California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)
  • Santa Barbara County
  • Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)
  • Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)

Over the past two decades, Far Western has successfully completed over 50 separate Caltrans cultural resources contracts totaling over $7,000,000. These include individual procurements for site survey, GIS database development, archaeological test evaluations, and data recovery excavations, as well as multiple task orders issued within an "on-call" contracting environment. In addition to Caltrans, Far Western has provided consultant services to a variety of local and county transportation authorities.
